Ruling Democrats urge public to observe King's concerns for unity
BANGKOK, Aug 23 (TNA) -- Thailand’s ruling Democrat Party on Sunday asked the people to heed His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s concerns regarding the lack of unity and cooperation in society and to use Parliament as the solution and means to achieve solidarity.

Democrat Party spokesman Buranaj Samutharak said undesirable movements are being seen in the country including plans by the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) supporters to dress in black Wednesday, which is the birthday of Privy Council president Gen Prem Tinsulanonda, the UDD collecting signatures to impeach Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and to rally next Sunday, and on rumours of an impending coup.

These movements would only shake the people, but the overall atmosphere in the country is becoming positive, Dr Buranaj said.

Every political party must help reduce social conflicts because the country will be at a dead-end again “if politics is played outside Parliament,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sathit Pitudecha, Democrat Party administrative committee member, said the UDD could continue their activities, but they must be within the country’s legal framework.

Mr. Sathit urged UDD supporters to think about the country’s image and the people who could be negatively affected by their planned upcoming activities.

Residents of the southern province of Songkhla, birthplace of Gen Prem, have already distributed leaflets urging people in the province to wear white shirts this Wednesday in order to boost his morale. (TNA)
