A(H1N1) flu deaths rise to 176; Human vaccine trials delayed

BANGKOK, Oct 21 (TNA) – Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health on Wednesday confirmed three new deaths from Influenza Type A(H1N1), bringing the country's total death toll to 176.

The Bureau of Epidemiology of the Department of Disease Control reported the new fatalities from A(H1N1) virus pandemic in Thailand from October 11-17, raising death tally to 176 based on September’s record.

In a further development of the human vaccine trials against A(H1N1) virus, the trials were delayed yet again due to technical problems during vaccine production, according to  Dr Vichai Chokewiwat, chair of the Government Pharmaceutical Organisation (GPO).

Currently, Thailand’s technical difficulties with vaccine production were related to the vaccine’s stability and immune stimulation tests, which are expected to show results within one month.

So far, the country’s human vaccine trials could not be scheduled, Dr Vichai.

Meanwhile, Dr Vichai added that one million doses of imported vaccines would be delivered here by the third week of December.

Another one million doses are expected to be received by the second week of January 2010.

Medical workers and women at about six-months pregnancy will be the first group to be vaccinated against Influenza Type A, Dr Vichai said. (H1N1).
