BANGKOK, Nov 30 (TNA) – Thailand’s Cabinet will consider lifting the heavy security net cast over the capital earlier this month after the Thaksin-oriented Red Shirt protest movement cancelled its planned demonstrations for the coming month.
When the Cabinet of Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva meets Tuesday in regular session it will weigh lifting the Internal Security Act (ISA) applied in Bangkok, according to Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban who is responsible for national security.
Mr Suthep, as director of a special security centre set up to maintain law and order in response to the mass protest told reporters after the meeting of security concerned agencies that the ministers will evaluate the situation and believe that it is unlikely that there would be any incidents affect national security during the period .
The security centre will report to the Cabinet on Tuesday and propose the ISA implementation, he said.
The Cabinet earlier imposed security across Bangkok from November 28 through December 14 to maintain law and order as the protesters pledged to bring down the Abhisit Vejjajiva government.
The United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) or the so-called Red Shirt activists however announced the postponement of their demonstration, then scheduled for November 28 through December 2, until after the New Year celebrations following warnings from many parties that the protest period is inappropriate as it is close to the birthday of His Majesty the King.
Asked what the government would do if the UDD rallied again, Mr Suthep said the centre would monitor the situation.
However, he said he believed the UDD would damage Thailand’s public happiness as the people wish to join the activities to mark His Majesty the King's birthday on December 5 and wanted to celebrate bringing in the New Year. (TNA)
