Supreme commander shrugs off rumours of coup

BANGKOK, July 7 (TNA) – Thailand's Supreme Commander Gen. Boonsang Niempradit on Monday brushed aside rumours about a possible coup d'etat in the Thai capital, saying there is no signal nor indication of any military movement.

Speaking of the People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) allegation that former classmates of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra planned to stage a coup, he said he had heard  rumours of the matter, but no evidence was found to substantiate either the events or the persons alleged to be involved in the alleged plot.

Additionally, Gen. Boonsang said he himself saw no signal nor indication of possible efforts to conduct a coup, so he believed there would be none.

Some people are worried about an imminent coup, some want it, others don't want it, he explained. People that think it is an option to use to resolve the country's ongoing political turmoil, he suggested, should think more carefully.

"I can remind (everyone) that a coup cannot solve the problems at their root cause. The military is not fond of staging coups. We have patience and tolerance. We have always sided with the people when they feel unhappy or desperate," Gen.Boonsang said.

Asked whether he wanted to tell politicians not to involve the military in their personal conflicts, Gen. Boonsang said he did not want to force anyone.

In a democratic society, the military must be patient because it has a duty to serve the people, he added. (TNA)
