BANGKOK, Feb 10 (TNA) - The Cabinet on Tuesday resolved to have financial institutions put on hold their plans to sue farmers for their failure to repay outstanding debts as thousands of indebted-farmers rallied at Government House to await the Cabinet decision.
Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said he and the Farmers Rehabilitation and Development Fund's executives would negotiate with all the creditors to find a solution on the matter.
Mr. Korn said he was confident that agreement could be reached to allow the outstanding debts to be restructured.
The Cabinet's decision came in the wake of a protest by thousands of indebted farmers from four of Thailand's regions.
They marched from the Royal Plaza to Government House on Tuesday morning, asking the government to honour its pledge to approve a Bt17.5 billion budget to settle their outstanding debts and provide them with occupational training.
The farmers also called on the government to prevent financial institutions and commercial banks from enforcing court rulings allowing them to seize their 93 million rai of farmlands after their mortgage payments had become overdue.
The protesting farmers had threatened to prolong their protest until their demands were met. (TNA)
