CHA-AM, Feb 26 (TNA) - Senior ASEAN officials, economic officials and ASEAN department directors-general from throughout the region held parallel meetings Thursday in the prelude to the 14th ASEAN Summit at the ministerial and leaders’ levels which opens Friday morning, according the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Information Department director-general and Foreign Ministry Spokesman Tharit Charungvat said that ASEAN senior officials met, beginning at 9.30am to discuss the programme for the ASEAN ministers and leaders, the topics for ministers’ discussions, and draft documents to be adopted or signed. The meeting was chaired by Virasakdi Futrakul, Thailand’s Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs.
Tharit said the Rohingya migrant problem might be discussed as the regional security issue was included in the agenda.
It is expected that at least 25 declarations, agreements and statements will be signed or adopted by ASEAN leaders, foreign ministers and economic ministers during the summit.
The documents reflect ASEAN's effort to respond to challenges in a more timely and tangible manner, and cover issues relating to ASEAN community-building, food and energy security as well as economic cooperation.
Of all these outcome documents, the Declaration on the Roadmap for an ASEAN Community 2009-2015 will be signed by ASEAN leaders, and wll serve as the cover-declaration for three ASEAN 'Community Blueprints'.
The ASEAN leaders are to adopt another five documents. The remainder will be signed or adopted by the foreign ministers or economic ministers. The three and a half days ahead would be packed with various activities, Mr. Tharit said.
The Thai delegation has over 20 activities scheduled. In addition to the various ASEAN meetings, there will be bilateral meetings of the prime minister, the foreign minister and the commerce minister with their respective counterparts. (TNA)
