PATTANI, March 7 (TNA) – Suspected insurgents early Saturday shot dead two brothers and burned their bodies in the violence-plagued southern province of Pattani, police said. The incident took place while the victims were riding a motorcycle between Pattani and Yala to sit for an examination at a college in Pattani, according to police. A combined police and military force rushed to the scene and found bodies riddled with multiple wounds from automatic rifle fire and pistol shots. The bodies were burned beyond recognition. Police said they found student identification cards some 15 metres away from the bodies and a number of leaflets left by the gunmen warning government officials not to hurt the innocent local Muslim population. The insurgents left after the incident and were still at large, police said.
More than 3,500 people have been killed by insurgents in Thailand’s four southernmost provinces since early 2004. (TNA)
