BANGKOK, March 22 (TNA) -- A special committee tasked with developing Thailand's five southernmost provinces will meet next week to discuss priorities of development programmes to be implemented in the troubled region, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Sunday. The National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) is compiling information on projects appropriate for development in the South, he said, as well as obstacles which could affect the implementation of development projects in the South. Development programmes in the five southernmost provinces -- Pattani, Yala, Narathiwat, Satun and Songkhla – have been stalled for some time, Mr. Abhisit acknowledged, adding that compiling information about the projects and prioritising their status would help speed implementation of the projects. Over 3,500 people have been killed in the violence in the troubled provinces since renewed violence erupted there more than five years ago. Mr. Abhisit said he planned to visit Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat during the recess of the House of Representatives. (TNA)
