BANGKOK, March 30 (TNA) - Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Monday his government will introduce and implement four major strategies to end the ongoing violence Thailand's insurgency-troubled South during the next three years until 2012.
Speaking on the southern insurgency at a programme organised by a House of Representatives extraordinary committee tasked with conducting a study on the unrest, Mr. Abhisit said the four strategies to be implemented in the region include improving the economy, public utilities, judicial system and human development.
The government will spend Bt76 billion on the projects which will continue until 2012, he said. More than 3,500 people have been killed since early 2004 as a result of the continuing insurgency in the deep South.
Acknowledging that the unrest is complicated due to differences in culture, race, and religion between the larger mainly ethnic Malay Muslim population and the Buddhist minority, Mr. Abhisit said an efficient application of the programmes could reduce the severity of the problems.
The insurgency could be solved, according to the prime minister, if all concerned parties travelled to the area to resolve the problem, and that improved understanding must be made with Thailand’s neighbours, Muslim world and the international community which attaches importance not using violence in defusing the problem. Mr. Abhisit said that in addition to implementation of the four major strategies, his government will review the enforcement of security laws and allow international agencies to monitor problems in the violence-plagued region in order to create better understanding.
